In July 1942, the Devil's Brigade was created. Under the official name of 1st Special Service Force, American and Canadian soldiers were brought together in a special unit specially trained to fight behind enemy lines. For the first time, their faces were blackened for camouflage purposes, earning them the nickname of the Black Devils of the German Wehrmacht.
An important piece of equipment for the Devil's Brigade was the specially designed V-42 combat knife, which was also part of the intensive close-combat training. The handle, made of pressed leather discs, ends in a tapered hammer. A thin leather padding underneath the slightly curved protective element was designed to prevent injury when thrusting. The blade, coated in non-rusting 1095 carbon steel, is ground on both sides and has a grooved thumb rest in the ricasso area.
