When Karl Elsener opened his cutlery workshop in Ibach-Schwyz in 1884, Switzerland was still one of the poorest countries in Europe. 
In those early years, he did everything he could to help combat poverty and unemployment in the Schwyz basin, creating jobs and stemming emigration. He supplied the first officer's knife to the Swiss army in 1891. 
He went on to develop the officer's knife, then the sports knife and finally the famous Swiss Army knife in 1897, laying the foundations for a flourishing company that would go on to become one of the major international corporations. Over the years, its spirit of solidarity, its roots in the region and its respect for unshakeable values have shaped the Victorinox philosophy.
