The steel of your marine knife is very important, choose a stainless steel: Titanium for its resistance and lightness, 420J2 steel for the top of the range knives (but which rusts with time) and H1. Don't forget that salt is very corrosive as is sea water.
Some people prefer a fixed blade as it is more resistant, others prefer a folding knife with liner lock.
A sailor's knife should not slip, especially when your hands are wet, so you should choose a knife with an ergonomic handle that can be handled in all circumstances.
To maintain your marine, diving or fishing knife you should rinse it with fresh water, dry it and grease the metal parts.
